Using A Professional Web Designer
You might need a website but just not have a clue about how to design it yourself, nor have the time or inclination. So why not hire a professional web designer?
How to Find a Web Designer
Reputation and a portfolio of previous work are paramount. Choosing someone that can’t show you examples of their RECENT work will lead to disaster.Recommendation from others is an excellent way to find a good designer. You should also be able to get some idea of the price they will charge before you talk to them. Don’t go for the cheapest designer you can find − this will be a false economy as they’re likely to be inexperienced.
At the other end of the scale be careful not to pay too much. A good designer will work to your budget and be honest about what you will get for your money.
Briefing the Designer
When you meet with a web designer you should feel comfortable that you can work with them. Remember, you are the client. They should interpret your brief and offer you some initial ideas that excite you.Be clear about the following:
- The objective of your website
- How many categories/pages you want it to have
- Whether the designer’s package includes training so you can update your site yourself
- Whether the designer includes the updating of your site in their price
- If they will assist you if you want to update your site yourself
- How long the project will take
The designer should understand the look and feel that you want to achieve and be able to turn your ideas into a professional site.
A web designer usually only designs the site but doesn’t write the words. You can either supply the text yourself or employ the services of a professional copywriter. A good web designer will have a copywriting contact and brief them on what you want. Alternatively you can ask for the copywriter to be present at the briefing meeting so they have a full understanding of your objectives. If this happens be clear whether you will be expected to pay the copywriter or if their fee is included in the web designer’s package.
A professional web designer will offer you unique and different ideas. They will propose things you haven’t thought about. You don’t have to accept all their ideas, but be open to suggestions.
Before briefing your website designer it’s a good idea to find some examples of sites that you like (and those you don’t!). An experienced designer will be able to present a similar tone and style without copying, which is the ultimate sin.
Be individual and always promise something new and visitors will return to your site again and again.
